Beard as Donor Source · Bandra, Mumbai

When scalp donor supply is limited or already exhausted, beard hair opens a new source of grafts — making hair restoration possible for patients who previously thought they had run out of options.

What is Beard Extraction?

A second donor source
when the scalp is not enough.

Beard Extraction refers to the process of harvesting hair follicles from the beard area — typically the chin, jaw, or neck — and using them as donor grafts for a hair transplant on the scalp. This technique is particularly valuable in cases where the scalp donor area alone cannot provide enough grafts to achieve the desired coverage.

Performed using the same FUE technique as standard scalp extraction, beard grafts are harvested one by one with no linear scar and minimal disruption to the beard's appearance. They are most commonly used in combination with scalp grafts to maximise coverage in a single session or across a planned multi-session approach.

When is Beard Extraction Used?

Clinical Scenarios

Four situations where
beard extraction is the answer.

Beard extraction is not used in every case — it is a solution for specific situations where scalp donor supply alone cannot deliver the coverage required. A consultation at Aeon will determine whether beard hair is needed and how much can be harvested without impacting your beard's appearance.

Patients with advanced hair loss and limited scalp donor supply who need more grafts than the scalp alone can provide

Those who have already undergone one or more hair transplants and have a significantly depleted scalp donor area

Cases where additional grafts are needed to boost density in the crown or mid-scalp without over-harvesting the remaining scalp donor

Repair cases where a large number of grafts are required to correct or improve the outcome of a previous transplant

How the Procedure Works

Step by Step

Five steps from
beard to scalp.

01

Assessment

Our specialist evaluates both your scalp and beard donor areas — assessing the quality, density, calibre, and suitability of beard grafts alongside the remaining scalp supply.

02

Beard Extraction

Follicles are carefully extracted from the beard area — chin, jaw, or neck — one by one using the FUE technique. No linear scar is created and the beard's overall appearance remains intact.

03

Combination Grafting

Beard grafts are most commonly used alongside scalp grafts in the same session — supplementing the scalp harvest and extending the total graft count available for coverage.

04

Implantation

Extracted grafts are placed into the recipient area at the correct angle, direction, and depth for natural growth — beard grafts are typically directed to the crown or mid-scalp.

05

Recovery

Mild redness in both the beard extraction area and the scalp recipient area is expected and settles within a few days. Most patients are comfortable and back to their routine within a week.

Why Aeon Clinic

Why Choose Aeon for Beard Extraction

More donor supply.
More possibilities.

Beard Extraction at Aeon is performed by surgeons who understand both scalp and facial hair restoration — because harvesting beard grafts correctly requires a precise understanding of beard anatomy, growth direction, and how these grafts will behave on the scalp over time.

Expands What is Possible

Beard extraction opens the door to meaningful restoration for patients who have been told their scalp donor area is insufficient — creating options where there appeared to be none.

No Linear Scar

FUE extraction from the beard leaves only tiny, scattered dot-like marks that are invisible once the beard grows back — no strip removal, no visible harvesting site.

Combined with Scalp FUE

Beard and scalp grafts are most commonly used together in the same session, maximising total graft yield and coverage within a single procedure.

Strategic Placement

Beard grafts are directed to areas where their texture performs best — typically the crown and mid-scalp — where natural blending over time produces the most seamless result.

Specialist Evaluation

Not all beard hair is suitable for scalp use. We assess density, calibre, and growth characteristics at consultation to confirm the suitability and volume of available beard grafts before anything proceeds.

Honest Assessment

We will tell you clearly how many beard grafts can be harvested without impacting your beard's appearance — and whether the total donor supply is sufficient for your coverage goals.

What to Know About Beard Hair as a Donor

Setting the Right Expectations

Beard hair is different —
and that is not a problem.

Slightly Coarser Texture

Beard hair tends to be slightly coarser and curlier than scalp hair. On the scalp, it softens over time in its new environment — and blends most naturally in areas where the hair is shorter or the recipient area already has coarser existing growth.

Best for Crown & Mid-Scalp

Beard grafts perform particularly well in the crown area, where the hair naturally sits in a spiral pattern and where coarser texture is less visible. They are less ideal for the very front of the hairline, where finer hair is preferred for a natural look.

Not Ideal for the Hairline

The frontal hairline requires finer, single-hair grafts for a natural soft edge. Beard hair, being coarser, is not the preferred choice for this zone — scalp donor hair from the finer fringe areas is far more suitable there.

Adapts Over Time

Transplanted beard grafts gradually adapt to their new scalp environment over 12 to 18 months — the texture evolves and blending improves as the hair settles into its new growth cycle. The final result looks significantly more natural than early post-procedure growth.

Everything you want to know about
Beard Extraction.

When done correctly and conservatively, beard extraction causes no visible thinning of the beard. Grafts are spread across the chin, jaw, and neck in a dispersed pattern — never concentrated in a single zone — ensuring the remaining beard looks full and consistent. The extraction marks are tiny and invisible once the surrounding beard grows back. At consultation, we will assess how many grafts your beard can provide while preserving its appearance.

Initially, yes — beard hair may appear slightly coarser or curlier than surrounding scalp hair. Over 12 to 18 months, transplanted beard grafts adapt to their new scalp environment and soften in texture. In the crown and mid-scalp — where beard grafts are typically placed — the blending is natural and the texture difference becomes minimal over time. The frontal hairline is intentionally left for finer scalp grafts to ensure the most natural result at close inspection.

The number of usable grafts varies depending on your beard density and growth pattern. In most men with a full beard, between 1,000 and 2,500 grafts can be harvested from the chin, jaw, and neck combined — without causing visible thinning of the beard. This varies significantly between individuals, which is why a physical assessment of your beard donor area is an essential part of the consultation process.

Both are possible. In most cases, beard extraction is performed alongside scalp FUE in the same session to supplement the total graft count. However, in patients whose scalp donor is completely exhausted, beard extraction can be performed as a standalone session — often combined with chest or body hair if the beard alone is insufficient. The most appropriate approach is determined at consultation based on your specific donor supply and coverage goals.

No — beard extraction is only appropriate where the beard is dense enough to provide usable grafts without compromising its appearance. Men with sparse or patchy beards may not have sufficient donor supply from this source. The quality, calibre, and growth characteristics of the beard grafts are also assessed — not all beard hair translates equally well to the scalp. Your surgeon will give you a clear assessment at consultation of whether beard extraction is viable for your case and how many grafts it can realistically contribute.
